Institute for Mechatronic Systems

Welcome

Welcome to the Institute for Mechatronic Systems (ifms) at Bern University of Applied Sciences. We are situated in the small town of Burgdorf, some 15km north-east of Bern, the capital city of Switzerland.

Research at the ifms is organized into three areas: Rehabilitation Engineering, Sports Engineering, and Advanced Control Systems.

Rehabilitation Engineering focuses on the cardiopulmonary and neurological rehabilitation of people with various disabilities, especially patients who have suffered a stroke or a spinal cord injury. We cooperate closely with major rehabilitation clinics in Switzerland.

Sports Engineering is focused on automation and control of treadmills and other exercise ergometer systems. We develop feedback systems for automatic control of heart rate and oxygen uptake, and for automated positioning. We work together with major treadmill manufacturers.

Advanced Control Systems research is specialized in the area of piezoelectric sensors and actuators, for applications including resonance and active damping. We cooperate with a range of industrial companies in this field.
